Different categories of new gTLDs

These new generic top-level domains are divided into different categories: community, geographic and IDN (internationalised domain name).

Community

This category includes applications such as .shop, .ski, .spa, .music, .bank and .hotel.

There are now 84 applications within this category.

Geographic

One Swedish top-level domain that we will be dealing with is .stockholm. A number of other capital cities around the world have also applied for their own top-level domain, such as .helsinki and .london. There are now 66 applications within this category.

IDN

These are top-level domains in non-Latin character sets, such as Cyrillic or Asian domains. In Sweden we also use the letters å, ä and ö, but no Swedish applications using any of these characters have been received. A total of 116 applications for top-level domains containing special characters have been received.

Other

Most of the applications received fall within this category, and we will see a relatively large number of registrations here. Generic top-level domains feature wording that describes a certain product or a particular area, for example. This group includes .app, .baby, .auction and .fishing.
