Nearly 300 million domain names registered

The number of domain names registered around the world grew by 2.2 million, or 0.8 percent, to 296 million by end of June. Registration has grown by 16,4 million or 5,9% over the year according to the latest report from Verisign.

Total there are 138 million country-code top level domains registered, a 8,2% increase over the year. .com and .net experienced aggregate growth, reaching a combined total of 133,5 million domain names, representing a 3,1% increase over the year. The increase is solely .com as .net registrations have stabilized at around the 15 million registrations mark, down from a peak of 15.2 million around a year ago. As of the end of June there were about 118,5 million .com and 15 million registered .net domains.

If this growth continues, the 300 million mark should be reached by the end of 2015.

The largest TLD:s in order by zone size are:

.com

.tk

.de

.net

.cn

.uk

.org

.ru

.nl

.info

Since the introduction of the new gTLD:s we can see that some of the before popular gTLD:s like .net and others including some ccTLD:s has suffered a decline in registrations.

For ccTLD:s .tk (Tokelau) remains the biggest. Mainly due to being free to register and renew. Second is .de, the top level domain has passed 16 million registrations under 2015 and keep growing.

As we can see the new gTLD:s currently account for about 2% of all registrations or 5,8 million registered domains were .xyz if the most popular and largest. (As of September 18th 7, 442,333 ngTLDs are registered)

The conclusion of this rapport is that the total amount of domains keep growing. The old gTLD:s such as .com and others are still very popular and will probably keep growing in the future. The growth for ccTLD:s also shows that country code domains are still very popular and will probably keep growing for a long time.

As of now about one third (around 500) of the new gTLD:s has been launched. As we can see in the report they only count for about 2% of all registrations. There are still much work to be done in order to increase the popularity of these domains.
