On 5 September 2016, Finland will amend its legislation concerning the Finnish top level domain .fi. Ficora (the organization that manages .fi) will move to a full-scale registry-registrar model.

Today, one can apply directly to Ficora for registering a .fi but after 5 September 2016 one must instead turn to one of Ficora approved registrar. The demand for local owner will also disappear at it will be free to register.

Domains registered before 5 September 2016 will continue to be active but can only be renewed by a registrar in the future.
